The four agricultural farms on Mount Vernon farmed over 3,000 acres and were called River, Muddy Hole, Dogue and Union. Washington originally cultivated tobacco, Virginia’s prime crop, but later made wheat his main harvest. George Washington lived for much of his childhood at Mount Vernon with his half-brother Lawrence, learning the ins and outs of planting and how to be a cultured member of society.

But in truth, the door and cupola do not align, nor are the windows symmetrically placed. The construction of the stair in 1758 pushed the door to the north and a window south out of the passage and into the small dining room. This break with the architectural ideal is a good example of the value Washington placed on practical solutions to challenging questions. At Mount Vernon that meant expanding the footprint of the home and the property itself. In fact, Washington added 8,000 square feet to the original house and 4,000 acres to the original property.

This historic preservation project is our birthday gift to America,” Bradburn said. “Consequently, we have made a number of useful discoveries including this blockbuster find of two fully intact glass bottles containing liquid that have not been seen since before the war for American independence. The farm where Washington lived between the ages of 6 and 22 is about 55 miles south of downtown Washington, just outside Fredericksburg. Tickets cost $9 for adults; $4.50 for students; children 6 and younger free. A self-guided iPad tour and 40-minute tour of the reconstructed house are included in the price of admission.

Each county sent two representatives and elections were held when the governor called them, not at regular intervals. Votes were cast viva voce, or by voice, the voters standing in front of the crowd to say the name of their chosen candidates out loud to be recorded by the sheriff. Sometimes raucous events, election days often found voters plied with alcoholic beverages and food by candidates.

Begin with the curbside drop off directly in front of themain entrance to the estate. There are no shuttles between the parking lots andentrance, so this is the best option for those with wheelchairs and walkers. By 1799 the distillery produced 11,000 gallons of whiskey, almost 20 times more than the average Virginia distillery, making his business venture one of the largest distilleries in the country. When you purchase an admission ticket online (recommended) or on site you will be asked to pick a time for the Mansion Tour. It is important you make it in time; if you have to reschedule your time it could be hours before you could begin the tour.

Explore Washington's Mansion

The rooms probably served as quarters for Frank Lee (an enslaved butler) as well as his wife Lucy (an enslaved cook) and their children. Additionally, a 22-foot-deep brick-lined dry well is set into the floor of the north end and was used to store food items. The two-story porch facing the Potomac River is one of the Mansion’s most iconic architectural features and was designed by Washington. In the 18th century, it was extremely rare to see such a grand façade on a private residence. Washington’s design for the two-story piers copies the pilasters on the exterior of the New Room’s Venetian window, although at a much greater ratio of width to height. The piazza provided an additional living space and is widely copied on homes throughout America.

The roof was raised to create a full second story and a third-floor garret. While Washington likely left the footprint of the first floor largely intact, he reconfigured the staircase and the second-floor rooms. In addition, ‘Closets,’ or one-story extensions, were added on the north and south ends of the house. Additionally, an entry in Washington's diary reported the house had four principal dependencies attached to the main house by "Pallisades" on low brick walls. Woodlawn hosts a wide array of events and provides private tours between April and December. The house is sparsely furnished, and little attempt has been made to make it appear lived-in.

We see the central passage, the oldest part of the mansion, which contains the only original furnishing we are allowed to touch — a polished wooden banister. We also walk past a guest bedroom, the New Room (main event hall), two parlors, a dining room, the Washingtons’ bedroom, and — in separate structures — the kitchen and a building where the guests’ servants stayed. Known at the time as the Washington Home Farm, it was a transportation hub positioned between Kings Highway and a high point of the Rappahannock, where ships brought goods all the way from Britain. A nearby lane led to a ferry across the river, so young George would have had the opportunity to encounter more worldly travelers who were passing through. I ambitiously set out to see both of Washington’s homesites on a rainy Monday in early June.

This room afforded her some privacy from the steady stream of visitors who continued to travel to Mount Vernon. The Mansion basement or cellar was an extremely important part of life in the Mansion. A large room at the south end of the building was designated as the “Cellar Kitchen” on a plan prepared by George Washington in 1774. This space appears to have been used as a kitchen for the enslaved individuals assigned to serve the Washington household. Washington first rusticated the Mansion in 1758 to make it appear constructed of structural sandstone blocks, which were more expensive than wood or brick. In doing so, Washington preserved the house his father built, while making it appear in the same league with other more substantially-built—and expensive—houses.

At Ferry Farm, I had been joined only by a couple from New York for an in-depth, 40-minute guided tour of the reconstructed home. At Mount Vernon, guides were stationed throughout the mansion tour, repeating one-minute spiels as dozens of visitors shuffled past, pausing briefly for questions before starting their spiel again. There are similarities between the Mount Vernon mansion and the house at Ferry Farm — both were riverfront homes on plantations once owned by Augustine Washington — but the tour experiences could hardly have been more different.

Did you know that for more than 150 years, Mount Vernon has never accepted any government funding? We rely upon people like you to preserve George Washington’s home and legacy. In George Washington’s time, the cellar was used for a variety of functions, including the storage of supplies and foodstuffs. With its origin in the first meeting of the Virginia General Assembly at Jamestown in July 1619, the House of Burgesses was the first democratically-elected legislative body in the British American colonies. About 140 years later, when Washington was elected, the electorate was made up of male landholders. The plantation was started in 1803 by George Washington Parke Custis, the stepgrandson of George Washington.

Visitors can walk tothe tomb located south of the Fruit Garden, about ten minutes from the mansion. The only way to see the Mansion is with a guided tour included in the price of admission. The house has been meticulously restored over the years and offers an absolutely stunning look into an authentic 18th century home. Not a recreation, but the actual home of George and Martha Washington. The architectural details designed by Washington himself are stunning.

In 2014, Mount Vernon began a project to discover exactly who is buried in the slave cemetery. The goal is to create a map of their locations, so that those lives can be remembered and honored. The Washington Tomb is where George and Martha Washington are buried along with some family members. Agriculture and fishing provided a profitable enterprise for Washington.

But my favorite way to get to Mount Vernon is to take the 25-mile George Washington Memorial Parkway. The National Park Service parkway begins at Exit 14 off Interstate 495 west of Washington, D.C., continues along the Potomac River through Alexandria, and ends at the roundabout at Mount Vernon. Along the way the Parkway passes several other NPS monuments and memorials, Gravelly Point Park, and Jones Point Park. Just in case you need it Mount Vernon offers freenon-motorized wheelchairs and walkers for visitors.

In addition to mansion tours and the Museum and Education Center, it offers tours of Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, gardens and groves and Washington’s tomb. Other special tours focus on first lady Martha Washington, the enslaved people who lived and worked at Mount Vernon, and music of the Revolution. The success of George Washington’s plantation was due in large part to the work performed by enslaved people. In some cases, the enslaved people lived communally in brick structures, and in other cases, they lived in buildings where they worked during the day. The museum and education center have exhibits and displays that explain various aspects of George Washington’s life, the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked at Mount Vernon as well as Washington’s shifting views of slavery. Plus there’s an interesting interactive experience where visitors can learn about the challenges Washington was faced with as a military and political leader.
